Bulemba-Ihandiro Cultural trail is one of the most riveting trails where tourists planning Uganda safaris enjoy an interesting cultural encounter within the Rwenzori sub-region.
This magnificent trail allows tourists to spend from 6-7 hours’ walk through the popular traditional Holy Valley in addition to other numerous sites of great cultural value to the traditional occupants of the Rwenzori Mountains known as the Bakonzo people. Gazetted in 1991, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Uganda (designated in 1994), covers an area of over 1000 square kilometers (386 square miles) and is popular for harboring Africa’s third highest Mountain peak as well as numerous Lakes, waterfalls and glaciers. It is also a home to several mammal species such as forest elephants, hyraxes, primates like black and white colobus monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys and many others as well as several bird species including the Rwenzori Turaco, the Rwenzori batis and the Archer’s Robin-chat among others.
When you reach this famous community, you will be offered a local guide who will introduce tourists to the renowned traditional healer-Muhima and also elaborate more on the powers of the work of traditional healers in healing the locals of their diseases in addition to the exceptional secrets of the spiritual importance of the famous traditional Bakonzo stool.
This cultural trail also leads tourists to the village’s blacksmith who moulds metals into different traditional tools such as machetes, knives, saucepans and many others; you will also learn how to weave baskets and fire making skills. This trail also leads you to the Kamusonge River with waters that are said to be tasty, sweet and fast to quench your thirst.
You can unwind in a grass-thatched hut built in the traditional Konzo style/design to relish the spectacular mountain views while unwinding before proceeding with your final long walk to the Cultural Museum with local materials that were used during the ancient Rwenzururu struggle, traditional dresses as well as other historical and cultural items of the people that occupy the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains.
