As several tourism stakeholders at Kasese are striving to promote tourism mainly at the Omukorukumi basecamp, the starting point for Bukurungu Trail, access roads remain a major challenge. Some of the local operators say, the road has been in a poor state year in and year out. Yet, it leads to a trail that is fast becoming a major entry point into the Rwenzori. If nothing is done, the potential of this route will be stifled.

At a time where both private sectors and local communities are have deployed are heavily investing in marketing and managing the Omukorukumi trail.

Tour operators, guides, and homestay providers have reported growing interest in the trail, which offers unique cultural and natural experiences.

The tourist trail creating jobs, providing a market for local produce, and offering hope for rural economic revitalization.

This makes several stakeholders claim for proper infrastructures specifically, grading, expansion, murram surfacing, and improved drainage in order to attain the growth, otherwise the growth will not be sustainable.

They are urging the Kasese District leadership to prioritize the road for development and conduct an on-ground assessment of its significance.

“There’s a clear opportunity to support the private sector in expanding tourism beyond the traditional routes. All we ask is for better infrastructure planning to match the momentum already building,” another tourism promoter added.

Local leaders are being encouraged to visit the area to witness firsthand the impact of this trail and the challenges posed by poor road conditions.

Tourism players believe that with proper support, the Omukorukumi and many other trails could become a model for community-led, sustainable tourism in the region.

As the tourism sector continues to rebound, improving accessibility to emerging destinations like Omukorukumi is seen as a strategic move that could further position Kasese as a top-tier eco-tourism hub in Uganda.
